Rules for the Game
This site reflects Rules for the Game of Living. It contains a collection of over 30 years worth of articles, pictures, diagrams, jokes and other materials reflecting the humor and pragmatic realities of humans living out life. Some entries are funny, others sad and a few are just "strange". New ones are always being found, created and are welcomed for consideration to be included here. (Just submit by "Posting a Comment" to any existing entry). The common theme, or criteria, is that all entries need to contain a perspective, an aspect of, or, an insight into the realities of human beings, nature, and life in general. (The basic qualification for an item to be added to this site is that is there is at least a little bit of pragmatic TRUTH contained within it.) THANK YOU for visiting RULES FOR THE GAME and ENJOY! (Note: You can also group 'Rules' entries by types and themes by clicking on a word in "Tags" or on one of the "Categories". This capability is available at the 'main index page' - just select the related 'link', located at the bottom of each indivdual entry page.)

The Goose Story - or - Lessons from Bird Brains

This fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter-flying along in "V" formation-you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way.

Discovery: As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.
Lesson: PEOPLE WHO SHARE A COMMON DIRECTION AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY CAN GET WHERE THEY ARE GOING MORE QUICKLY AND EASILY BECAUSE THEY ARE TRAVELING ON THE THRUST OF EACH OTHER.

Discovery: When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone-and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.
Lesson: IF WE HAVE AS MUCH SENSE AS A GOOSE-WE WILL STAY IN FORMATION WITH THOSE WHO ARE HEADED THE SAME WAY AS WE ARE.

Discovery: When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point for a while.
Lesson: IT IS SENSIBLE TO TAKE TURNS DOING DEMANDING JOBS (either for geese flying south - or - with people).

Discovery: Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
Sad Observation: What do humans say when we honk from behind?

Discovery: Finally (and this is significant) - When a goose gets sick, or is wounded by gun shots, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly, or until it dies; only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.
Lesson: IF WE HAVE THE SENSE OF A GOOSE, WE WILL STAND BY EACH OTHER.

(This little bit of prose has a lot to do with business and, more importantly, everything to do with life!) Source Unknown
